Ngāti Korokī-Kahukura Trust tackled the complexities of building on its ancestral land by working with others and never losing sight of its vision; to bring whānau home, connect them to hapū, iwi and marae, and contribute to their intergenerational wellbeing.
Ten whānau have now built on whenua below Pōhara Marae in Maungatautari, Waikato. They will all benefit from communal facilities – a māra kai, clean water, a wastewater system and parking as well as the invaluable benefit of raising their whānau on their tūrangawaewae. A pioneering shared equity arrangement with Westpac allows whānau to own their homes outright, while the iwi retains an ongoing and lifetime interest in any future transactions. In another first, Ngāti Korokī-Kahukura gained the right to develop a papakāinga in a rural zone, allowing for individual subdivision of general title land to whānau. Te Puni Kōkiri supported the project with almost $1.4 million towards a feasibility study and infrastructure costs.
